Science and Technology for Sustainable Development of Indonesia

On 15 December 2012 a seminar entitled “Science and Technology for Sustainable Development of Indonesia” was held at Tokyo Institute of Technology, Tokyo. This seminar was a part of  Tokyo Tech Indonesian Commitment Award (TICA), an annual program organized by the Indonesian Student Association in Tokyo Institute of Technology (PPI Tokodai) aiming to inspire, promote, and support students engaging research in the sciences and engineering disciplines. TICA comprises two main events which are undergraduate student paper contest and seminar dealing with certain topic in science & technology.

The goal of this seminar was to discuss problems connected with sustainable development that combines all main areas of human activity – economy, environment and social activity. It was also intended to propose solution to solve those problems with the scientific and technological approach. In this year’s seminar, the problem case discussed was solving waste problem in Indonesia.

The seminar was arranged into three sessions, besides opening and closing sessions. The first opening sessions were addressed by Nur Ahmadi as the chairman of the organizing committee, Iqbal Djawad, PhD as the representative of Indonesian Embassy Tokyo, and Yuriko Sato, PhD as the representative from International Student Center, Tokyo Institute of Technology. In his opening remarks, Nur Ahmadi emphasized the importance role of science and technology in shaping the future and enabling countries to enter knowledge based society. The same message delivered by Mr. Iqbal, with other additional important keys toward being advanced nation: innovation and commitment. In her opening speech, Mrs. Sato stated that she was very much impressed by the dedication of PPI Tokodai supporting the young promising Indonesian students and thought that TICA was the special event for this year. She also pointed out that this event accords with Tokyo Tech vision 2009 which foster the development of education, research, and contribution to the society.

Afterward, the first session was started by the presentation of the 3rd winner of TICA 2012 student paper contest, Vincentius Ermo Pradhana from Sepuluh November Institute of Technology (ITS), with the paper entitled “Portable High Performance Gamelan Tuner using Adaptive Waveform Pattern Matching”. Then followed by 2nd winner presentation entitled “Impact Studies of Salt Drying Equipment Implementation by Applying Zeolite Technology as Innovative, Cheap, and Fast Salt Production Technology” by Kenny Lischer from the University of Indonesia (UI). The last presenter was Alfin Kurniawan, from Widya Mandala Catholic University Surabaya (UKWMS) with his research title “Template-free Synthesis of Sugar-based Microporous Carbons from Bagasse at Subcritical Condition for High Performance Supercapacitors”. The first session was closed by presenting the certificates to the winners.

The keynote speakers in this seminar were Iqbal Djawad, PhD, Education attache of Indonesian Embassy Tokyo (Indonesia) and Prof. Kunio Yoshikawa from the Department of Environmental Science and Technology, Tokyo Institute of Technology (Japan).

As first keynote speaker, Mr. Iqbal delivered a speech entitled “Innovation of Sci-Tech and the Future”. He began by quoting Charles Darwin, “It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most adaptable to change.” He pointed out the the important capability of mastering change and shaping the future. Three aspects greatly needed to achieve success against the next coming challenges: technical, social, and creative. “The key to shape the future is to reduce the complexity and make it simple.”, he added. In his closing speech, he motivated all Indonesian people to be more creative and keep making innovation as for the strangest idea will find its fans.

The second keynote speaker, Prof. Yoshikawa, in his speech talked about “Innovative Japanese Waste-to-Green Product Technologies for Establishment of Sustainable Waste Management System in Developing Countries”. He mentioned that each country has their own problem and will solve it based on their culture, background, and values. In Japan, 1 ton of waste costs around 500 USD, while in Indonesia, it needs less than 10% of that cost. Indonesia has serious problem on waste management. Jakarta as the capital city and the symbol of Indonesia produces the largest amount of waste, nearly 6000 ton every day, without proper management. Prof. Yoshikawa suggested that Indonesia should apply technologies to convert unutilized resource such as waste and biomass into high added value green products such as coal-like electricity, fertilizer. There are some technologies to solve waste problem such as hydrothermal technology, pyrolysis technology, gaseous fuel production and power generation.

Responding to question on the possibility to make waste processing technologies for home scale industry, Prof. Yoshikawa explained that those technologies can be established in the small community. Besides solving the waste problem, they also provide new employment and offer profitable business. He also stated that the most realistic solution of waste problem in Indonesia for the short and middle term is by collaborating with the developed countries which has huge capital and reliable technologies. They can build a waste processing infrastructure that gives profit for both parties.

After the keynote speech was finished, all the participants including the speakers gathered in Tokyo Tech main building’s hall to have photo session and then followed by having lunch party. After lunch break, the event continued to its final session, which was open discussion about how to solve waste problem in Indonesia. This discussion was divided into three clusters: technology, regulation and management, social and culture. The discussion which was moderated by Mr. Rane Hafied (NHK language specialist) and Mr. Pandji Prawisudha (Tokyo Tech assistant professor) ran very well. There were many interesting questions and ideas on how to solve the waste problem in Indonesia from three different perspectives.
